The 5 essential steps of any haircare routine

Elisabeth Gagnon, PHYTO Paris National Educator, presents the 5 essential steps of the PHYTO Paris haircare routine—for hair that is healthy and beautiful!

A multi-step haircare routine is the best way to ensure that all of your hair’s needs are met. For maximum effectiveness, complete the 5 essential steps at least once a week. On the days in between, a mini version of the same routine - Shampoo, Mask and Leave-in Treatment - will keep your hair nourished and healthy every day.

Step 1: Pre-Shampoo

The first step of the routine is a pre-shampoo. This step helps ensure a deep cleansing of the scalp, removing soap residue, calcium deposits from rinsing water, pollution, impurities and excess sebum, which could damage the scalp and prevent optimum absorption of haircare products. PHYTOD-TOX Pre-Shampoo Mask is the perfect choice for this part of your routine and should be used once a week.
Pre-shampoos are also a great way to rebalance scalps that are too greasy or too dry and prone to dandruff, itchiness and irritation. All of these issues can be tackled using an adapted pre-shampoo such as the PHYTOPOLLEINE Botanical Scalp Treatment. Made with 1,750 grams of plants and 100% natural, PHYTOPOLLEINE has been effectively treating and rebalancing scalps for decades. This pre-shampoo also promotes microcirculation, which stimulates hair growth and provides the hair with nutrients and oxygen all the way down to the bulb!

Step 2: Shampoo

The second step of the routine is washing the hair using a shampoo specifically selected to provide gentle cleansing while respecting the needs of your scalp and hair.

To know which shampoo to choose, pay attention to your scalp’s needs. For instance, if you have dandruff or an irritated scalp, you’ll want to choose a shampoo that will help resolve these particular issues. If your scalp is healthy, you can focus on the needs of your hair instead. For example, use PHYTOCOLOR to give coloured hair added protection or PHYTOJOBA to help give dry hair a good dose of hydration!
A word of advice: enhance the benefits of the shampoo by lathering a second time and leaving it on your hair for 2-3 minutes in order to treat the hair and scalp.

Step 3: The Mask

The third step, immediately after shampooing, is to apply a mask specifically selected according to your hair type and needs. Masks are intended to heal hair from root to tip, smooth and nourish the cuticle as well as repair and hydrate hair fibre deep down.
When should you use a PHYTO Paris mask? Every time you shampoo! In fact, that’s why PHYTO doesn’t make a conditioner, preferring instead to offer a hair mask that provides a deep treatment every time you wash your hair—for maximum effectiveness.
How long should you leave the mask in your hair? Opt for an intense treatment once a week by letting the mask sit in your hair for 5 to 7 minutes. Otherwise, you can use the mask for express care several times a week, leaving it in for 1 to 2 minutes before rinsing.

Step 4: Leave-in Treatment

Although too often forgotten, the second-to-last step—a leave-in treatment— is actually a very important one! As a complement to your shampoo and mask, your leave-in treatment should be chosen in accordance with your hair’s needs to smooth hair scales, repair damage, hydrate, provide heat protection, nourish and beautify. Yes, a leave-in treatment has the ability to do all of that for your hair!

Concentrated formulas are ideal for providing added protection, preventing dehydration and protecting against heat damage.

Step 5: Styling product

The last step in your beauty ritual is the styling product. This particular product should be chosen in accordance with the style you are looking to achieve. Using a styling product is ideal for a number of reasons: it makes detangling and styling your hair easier, helps tame hair and unruly frizz and provides hold to keep your locks in place! Another advantage of using PHYTO Paris styling products is that they are plant-based, which means you won’t be loading your hair and scalp down with harmful products.
